In late January 1915, African Christian John Chilembwe (?-1915) and his gang from Nyasaland (then a British protectorate, now Malawi), an inland region of southern Africa, killed four white plantation owners and attacked an ammunition depot, but were suppressed in retaliation by colonial authorities. The motive for the rebellion was the worsening working conditions of the natives after the plantation owners imported Mozambican laborers, and the large-scale conscription of native soldiers by the British Army after the outbreak of World War I.
