A marine fish of the family Anguilliformes and family Polytminae (illustration). It is found in the waters off Kushiro, Hokkaido, and around the Kumano Nada Sea. It has also been known to be found in the waters off Hawaii. Its body is brown, with very small, oval scales that are embedded in the skin. It has a long, pointed snout and a large mouth. Its gill slits are on the ventral surface, and are continuous on both sides at the front end. It is approximately 60cm long. It is a deep-sea fish. It is of little value as food. ウナギ目ホラアナゴ科の海産魚(イラスト)。北海道釧路近海から熊野灘辺にかけて分布。ハワイ近海からも知られている。体は褐色で,うろこは楕円形でごく小さく,皮膚に埋没している。吻(ふん)は長くてとがり,口は大きい。鰓孔(さいこう)は腹面にあり,前端部で左右が連続している。全長およそ60cm。深海性。食用としての価値は低い。【日比谷 京】
