This is a form of sport diving where you hold your breath without using breathing equipment such as scuba. It is also called "smoguri" (free diving). In contrast, scuba diving is when you use scuba. Diving time varies greatly from 30 seconds to 2 minutes depending on the person's breath-holding ability, but by taking several deep breaths beforehand, staying calm underwater, and training to wait 2 minutes between dives, you can extend your breath-holding time to nearly 2 minutes. You may feel pain in your eardrum from about 3 meters deep. This is because the water pressure pushes the eardrum toward the middle ear, where the air pressure is lower. By pinching your nose and blowing, swallowing, or moving your jaw (clearing your ears), the Eustachian tube that leads to the middle ear will open and the air pressure in the middle ear will be equalized with the water pressure, and the pain will disappear. Holding your breath can cause oxygen deficiency in the body, which can lead to blacking out. Although there are records in the history of breath-hold diving of pulling an anchor from a depth of 80 metres, as of May 2012 the world record is 273 metres, set in October 2011 by Croatian Goran Colak (1983- ) in Italy. Skin diving does not require any special equipment, but it can be enjoyed throughout the season by using a snorkel, diving mask, fins, weight belt, wetsuit, etc. It is also useful for training for scuba diving. In this way, more and more people are enjoying it as a sport, diving repeatedly for 1-2 minutes at depths of less than 10 meters and enjoying the underwater scenery. Skin diving, which requires only simple equipment such as a snorkel, fins, and diving mask, is also called schnorkeling and has many enthusiasts, especially in the coral reefs of southern Japan, which have beautiful underwater scenery.
