[Exploration History]
In ancient Greece, the northernmost region was called Thule (Latin: Thule, and especially Ultima Thule), and they believed it to be the northernmost point of the world. According to Hipparchus, the area around Thule was considered uninhabitable by humans. However, around 320 BCE, the Greek Pytheas set out from Massalia (now Marseilles), discovered Britannia (Great Britain), and attempted to explore Thule in the north.
