Mibu-dera Temple

Mibu-dera Temple

Located in Mibu Naginomiya-cho, Nakagyo-ku, Kyoto City, this temple is a special head temple of the Ritsu sect. It is also called Jizo-in or Hodo-sanmai-ji, and commonly known as Mibu Jizo. The principal image of the temple is Jizo Bodhisattva. The temple was founded by the monk Ganjin Wajo. According to the Mibu-dera Engi, the monk Kaiken of Mii-dera had the Buddhist sculptor Jocho create a three-foot (about one meter) Jizo Bodhisattva statue, and the temple was founded in 1005 (Kanko 2) with this as the principal image. After that, Emperor Shirakawa bestowed the title of Jizo-in on the temple, and in 1213 (Kenpo 1), Taira Munehira moved the temple from Gojo-bomon Mibu to its current location. In 1257 (Shoka 1), the temple was completely burned down, but Sohei's son Taira Masahira rebuilt it with the help of Yuzu-nembutsu Kanjin Hijiri Dogo. The Mibu Dai-Nembutsu Festival (Mibu Kyogen), which is currently held every year from April 21st to 29th, is said to have originated from a fundraising ceremony for Yuzu-nembutsu by Engaku Shonin (Dogo). The main hall, which was rebuilt in 1811 (Bunka 8), burned down in 1962 (Showa 37), along with the principal image of Jizo Bodhisattva. The main hall was rebuilt in 1967, and in 1970, a wooden standing Jizo Bodhisattva statue (a nationally important cultural property) was added as the principal image from Toshodaiji Temple.
