Togasawara (English spelling) Japanese douglas fir

Japanese: トガサワラ - とがさわら(英語表記)Japanese douglas fir
Togasawara (English spelling) Japanese douglas fir
An evergreen tall tree of the pine family native to Japan with needles similar to fir, it grows deep in the mountains and is not abundant. It can reach a height of 40m and a diameter of 1m, with dark brown bark on the trunk that splits vertically and peels off in scales. The thick branches spread out horizontally to form a cone-shaped crown, and the one-year-old branches are pale yellow. The needles are linear, and the pits where they fell (pulvini) are slightly raised on the branch surface. In April, axillary male flowers appear in clusters on the previous year's branches, and female cones appear at the tips of the previous year's branches. Around October, egg-shaped, woody yellow-brown cones 4-6cm long ripen and grow downward.
