Mount Io

Japanese: 硫黄山 - いおうざん

A cone-shaped active volcano (→ stratovolcano) that rises in the center of the Shiretoko Peninsula in northeastern Hokkaido. Also known as Shiretoko Iouzan. Elevation 1,562m. Part of Shari Town. Part of the Kuril volcanic belt, there are two explosion craters at the top. The highest point is a dome that erupted on the crater wall of the northern crater. Sea cliffs have developed at the foot of the mountain facing the Sea of Okhotsk and the Nemuro Strait. When it erupts, molten sulfur is spewed from the crater, and the amount of eruption in 1936 reached about 200,000 tons. It is made of pyroxene andesite and pyroclastic material. It is part of Shiretoko National Park.

北海道北東部，知床半島の中央にそびえる円錐（コニーデ）形の活火山（→成層火山）。別称知床硫黄山。標高 1562m。斜里町に属する。千島火山帯の一部で，頂部に二つの爆発火口がある。このうち北側火口の火口壁上に噴出した円頂丘が最高点を形成。オホーツク海，根室海峡に臨む山麓は海食崖が発達する。爆発の際には火口から溶融硫黄を噴出，1936年の爆発時の噴出量は約 20万tに上った。輝石安山岩，火山砕屑物からなる。知床国立公園の一部。
