A village in Hata County in the southwest of Kochi Prefecture. Population 3,862 (1995). Located in the middle reaches of the Shimanto River, which flows west, the village borders Ehime Prefecture to the north. The Shimanto River meanders violently here, and it is part of the area formerly known as Kaminoyamago. Most of the village area is forest, and in the Edo period it produced paper for the Tosa Domain. It previously produced a lot of charcoal, but nowadays it is used for timber and is actively cultivated as a shiitake mushroom farm. Other products include sericulture, tea, and corn. Towa Daikagura (Hata Kagura), which is dedicated to the autumn festival of Ubusuna Shrine in Tokawa and the Showa area, is one of the Important Intangible Folk Cultural Properties of Japan, known as Tosa Kagura. 高知県南西部,幡多(はた)郡の村。人口3862(1995)。西流する四万十(しまんと)川の中流域に位置し,北は愛媛県に接する。四万十川が激しく蛇行するところで,かつて上山郷といわれた地域に含まれる。村域のほとんどが山林で,江戸時代には土佐藩の御用紙を産し,以前は木炭の産出が多かったが,現在は用材のほか,シイタケ栽培が盛ん。ほかに養蚕や茶,トウモロコシなどを産する。十川(とおかわ)や昭和地区の産土(うぶすな)神社の秋祭に奉納される十和大神楽(幡多神楽)は国の重要無形民俗文化財〈土佐の神楽〉の一つ。
