The only port city in the Democratic Republic of Sudan, facing the Red Sea. It is called Būra Sūdān in Arabic. It has a population of 305,000 (1993). It was built in 1906 as a trading port to replace Suwākin. It is connected to the capital, Khartoum, by rail, but this is inefficient, so a 1,179 km expressway is being constructed with assistance from various countries. It is an export port for cement, cotton, sugar, etc. It is home to Sudan's only oil refinery, and a pipeline runs to Khartoum. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
