Tomei Expressway - Tomei Expressway

Japanese: 東名高速道路 - とうめいこうそくどうろ
Tomei Expressway - Tomei Expressway

This expressway runs from Tokyo through the Tokai region to Komaki City. It is managed by Central Nippon Expressway Company. Its legal name is the First Tokai Expressway, which starts in Setagaya Ward, Tokyo, passes through Atsugi City, Kanagawa Prefecture, Gotemba City, Shizuoka Prefecture, and Numazu City, runs west parallel to National Route 1 through Shizuoka Prefecture and Aichi Prefecture, and connects to the Chuo Expressway Nishinomiya Line in Komaki City, Aichi Prefecture (during this time, it connects with the planned Second Tokai Expressway in Ebina City, Isehara City, Gotemba City, Shizuoka City, Hamamatsu City, and Toyota City). It is 347 kilometers long, with six lanes (seven lanes in some areas) between Tokyo and Gotemba City, and four lanes elsewhere. Along with the Meishin Expressway (part of the Chuo Expressway Nishinomiya Line), which was opened in its entirety in 1965, it serves as a major transportation artery in the Tokaido Belt Zone and has played a major role in the advancement of development in the areas along the route.

Construction began in 1962, with a portion of the line opening in 1968 and the entire line in 1969. In fiscal 2010, the line saw an average daily usage of about 430,000 vehicles.
