...The third Shogun, Iemitsu, liked young men, so he invited young Kabuki performers from the Hikosaku and Kanzaburō troupes to Edo Castle to entertain himself while he was ill. Around 1650 (Keian 3), after Iemitsu's death, he banned young Kabuki in Edo for the reason that it was disrupting public morals, and it is said that he shaved off the bangs of stars such as Tamashima Shudono and Ikushima Iori to set an example. This was probably intended to prohibit homosexuality, which was a major force in forming gangs, and to prevent the gathering of disturbing ronin in Edo.
