In prehistoric times, it was the domain of the Celtic Iceni people, but attempts were made to develop it in Roman times, with the construction of a long waterway (the Car Dyke) stretching from Lincoln to Peterborough, and a causeway (the Fen Causeway) that crosses the centre of the area. However, in the Middle Ages, it again fell into disrepair, and the area was rich in aquatic plants such as reeds, wild birds and eels, and malaria was common. …
