This work was a modern illustrated plant encyclopedia that went beyond herbalism, and was based on the natural history of Martin Houttuyn of the Netherlands, and could be said to be the final conclusion of the introduction of Western botany in the Edo period. The Dutch books used as reference were Martin Houttuyn's Natural History, as well as five botanical books by Rembert Dodonaeus, Dieterich Leonhard Oscamp, Johann Hieronymus Kniphof, and Johann Wilhelm Weinmann.
