This book, also known as the "Kyome Sho Kyuki," is a compilation of records from the Dojima rice market in Osaka, where large amounts of rice stamps issued by the storehouses of various feudal domains were bought and sold during the Edo period, and where futures speculation trading was officially permitted from 1730 (Kyoho 15). It traces the history of the market from the records of the market, as well as old records and writings from that time. The editor and year of publication are unknown, but the articles span the period from 1615 (Genwa 1) to 1870 (Meiji 3). The Dojima Rice Market is said to have been established during the Genroku period (1688-1704), but this book contains background information on the development of Osaka's urban area after the Genna Enbu era, the city system, the Kyoho fire, the rise and fall of Yodoya which led to the establishment of the rice market, and shogunate laws and regulations related to rice trading up until the official recognition of the choai rice trade. In reporting on subsequent developments in the Dojima Rice Market, it also includes summaries of important events in Osaka, such as the implementation of the shogunate's rice price policy in Osaka, as well as natural and man-made disasters that directly or indirectly affected rice prices. This book is not only a basic historical source on the commercial capital of Osaka, but also a useful source for shedding light on the finances of feudal lords, including the shogunate.
