Togane Highway

Japanese: 東金街道 - とうがねかいどう

It is also called the Onari Highway. It was constructed in the early modern period, and it is said to have been a nearly straight road that ran from Funabashi-juku in Shimousa Province to Togane in Kazusa Province, passing through Fujisaki Village, Amado Village, Kotehashi Village, Nakata Village, and Kamiisago Village. There was also the Onari Shindo Road that extended from Togane to Kujukurihama. It is said that this road, along with the new road, was constructed in 1613 by Doi Toshikatsu, the lord of Sakura Domain in Shimousa, in three days and three nights. It is said that this road was constructed for falconry, and the Togane Palace, a resting facility for the shogun, was constructed at the same time, and the Ochaya Palace was constructed in Nakata Village as a relay point between the Funabashi Palace. It is thought that the construction had political and military significance ahead of the Winter Siege of Osaka. The palace was later demolished, and it was used as a supply route connecting the outer and inner Boso.

御成(おなり)街道などとも呼ばれる。近世初期に造成され，下総国船橋宿から藤崎(ふじさき)村，天戸(あまど)村，犢橋(こてはし)村，中田(なかつた)村，上砂(かみいさご)村を経て上総国東金に至る道で，ほぼ直線であったという。さらに東金から九十九里浜に延びる御成新道があった。新道も含め，1613年に下総佐倉藩主土井利勝が三日三晩で造成したと伝える。この道普請は鷹狩のためといわれ，将軍の休泊施設である東金御殿が同時に建設され，船橋御殿との中継地として中田村にも御茶屋御殿が建設された。普請は大坂冬の陣を控えた時点での政治的・軍事的な意味合いがあったとも考えられる。その後御殿は破却され，外房と内房を結ぶ物資輸送路として利用された。
