A peasant uprising occurred in Kozuke and Shinano provinces during the Edo period. In Gunma Prefecture, it is called the Annaka Uprising, and in Nagano Prefecture, it is called the Tenmei Uprising or the Tenmei-Saku Uprising. The damage caused by the eruption of Mount Asama in 1783 caused food shortages and led to rice stores being hoarded, leading to attacks on rice stores by horsemen, laborers, and palanquin carriers on the Nakasen road. This triggered the uprising to spread throughout the Annaka domain, and then to Shinano, where it spread to about 2,000 people and reached the Ueda domain, but was suppressed by force.
