The capital of the Republic of El Salvador. Population: 422,570 (1992). Located at the foot of San Salvador Volcano (1,960 m) in the west-northwest, it is 682 m above sea level. It was founded in 1525 by the Spanish conqueror Pedro de Alvarado and moved to its current location in 1528. During the colonial period, it was the center of the Cuscatlan region, and was the capital of the Central American Federation from 1834 to 1839. It became the capital of El Salvador in 1839.
