In the 19th century, the number of public art museums and art exhibitions increased, and instead of the royal courts and churches that had been the patrons of artists, capitalists and businessmen started collecting for investment and speculation. Influential art dealers such as Georges Petit, Wildenstein, Seligman, and Naedler emerged. In particular, the Durand-Ruel Company, which had been paying attention to the Barbizon School and the Impressionists even when they were still unknown and persuaded their customers, Le Père Tanguy (1825-94), a small art dealer who was popular with Post-Impressionist painters, and Théo van Gogh (1854-91), who was conservative but handled his brother's friends, are considered modern art dealers. From the end of the 19th century onwards, Vollard held a series of solo exhibitions of works by Cézanne, Van Gogh, Matisse, Maillol, and others, published a luxurious collection of lithographs, and unearthed forgotten artists of the past, becoming a typical 20th century art dealer. *Some of the terminology that mentions "Gogh, T. van" is listed below.
