A city in the southeastern part of Norway, in the region of Vestfold. Population 9,137 (1980). Norway's oldest city, dating back to around 900. The old name Túnsberg means "fortified mountain." It was the trade and religious center of the Vestfold royal family (the Ynglings, who produced Harald I), and probably the successor to Skiringsal in the south. It was also the peasant assembly place (people's assembly) for the region, and was one of the four cities that served as the royal administrative base in the Middle Ages.
