A steel company that is one of the core companies of the Sumitomo Group (see Sumitomo Zaibatsu). It was established in 1935 by the merger of Sumitomo Copper Rolled Steel Tube, which developed from Sumitomo Copper Rolled Works opened in 1897, and Sumitomo Steel Works, which developed from Sumitomo Steel Foundry opened in 1901. In 1959, the copper rolling and light metal division was separated into Sumitomo Light Metal Industries. In 1953, the company joined the ranks of blast furnace manufacturers by merging with Kokura Steel Works, and established an integrated system by building a state-of-the-art steelworks in Wakayama. It also built a large steelworks in Kashima, Ibaraki Prefecture, and took an aggressive expansion strategy. It is a top manufacturer of seamless steel pipes for oil extraction, but continues to struggle, and has announced a partnership with Nippon Steel and Kawasaki Steel. It is seeking diversification. Head office is in Osaka. Capital in 2011 was 262 billion yen, and sales for the fiscal year ending March 2011 were 1,402.4 billion yen. Sales composition (%) is 96% for steel and 4% for other.

住友グループ（住友財閥参照）の中核企業の一つである製鉄会社。1897年開設の住友伸銅場が発展した住友伸銅鋼管と，1901年開設の住友鋳鋼所の発展した住友製鋼所が，1935年合併して成立。1959年伸銅・軽金属部門を住友軽金属工業として分離。1953年の小倉製鋼所合併により高炉メーカーの列に入り，和歌山に新鋭製鉄所を建設して一貫体制を確立，さらに茨城県鹿島に大製鉄所を建設して積極的拡大策をとる。石油採掘用のシームレス鋼管のトップメーカーだが不振が続き，新日本製鐵，川崎製鉄との提携を発表。多角化を模索している。本社大阪。2011年資本金2620億円，2011年３月期売上高１兆4024億円。売上構成（％）は，鉄鋼96，その他４。
