A document is a medium that expresses, records, and transmits externalized information, and acts as a medium for communication that transcends space and time. Documents that can be handled by computers as digital information are collectively called electronic documents. [Definition of electronic document] The structural characteristics of a document are that it has three components: information content expressed in element media such as text, images, figures, and tables; a logical structure that reflects the document's contextual structure and expresses the relationships between the information contents; and a layout structure for visualization on a display medium.
