Ken Ishikawa

A scholar of educational history. After working as a substitute teacher and instructor at an elementary school, he graduated from Tokyo Higher Normal School and later served as a professor at Tokyo Women's Higher Normal School. He is well known for his research on "Oraimono" and "Sekimon Shingaku." He mainly studies the history of education in the Edo period, such as regional education research using terakoya schools, domain schools, and the Aizu domain as examples. He also wrote works on the development of views on children in ideological research. His research methods are characterized by statistical techniques and a socio-economic history perspective. Many of the materials he collected, mainly consisting of Oraimono, are preserved as the "Kendo Bunko" and are available to future scholars of educational history. His main works are "Study on the History of Sekimon Shingaku" (1938) and "Nihon Kyōkasho Taikei Oraihen" (17 volumes, 66-74).

教育史学者。小学校代用教員,訓導を経て,東京高等師範学校を卒業,のち東京女子高等師範学校教授などをつとめた。「往来物」と「石門心学」の研究で著名。寺子屋や藩校,会津藩を事例とした地域教育研究など,江戸時代の教育史をおもに研究。また,思想研究でも児童観の発達に関する著作を残している。研究方法としては統計的手法と社会経済史的観点を特徴とする。往来物を中心として収集された多くの資料は,「謙堂文庫」として保存され,後進の教育史研究者に公開されている。主著『石門心学史の研究』 (1938) ,『日本教科書体系 往来編』 (17巻,66~74) 。
