Also known as elementary charge. The smallest unit of electric charge. All electric charges are equal to positive or negative integer multiples of the elementary charge. It corresponds to the absolute value of the charge of charged elementary particles such as electrons and protons. Symbol: e. 1.6021773 coulombs or 4.803207×10(-/) ¹ (0/) CGS electrostatic unit. However, recent particle theory assumes the existence of quarks, which are the even more basic building blocks of elementary particles, and states that the charge of a quark can be e/3 or 2e/3 (both positive and negative).
