A former town in Ashikita District, southwest of Kumamoto Prefecture. Facing the Yatsushiro Sea, the Hisatsu Orange Railway runs through the town. There is an electrode manufacturing factory, and citrus cultivation is thriving. There are Koganehama Beach and Umiura Beach. Incorporated into Ashikita Town in January 2005. Area: 32.76 km2 . 熊本県南西部，芦北郡の旧町。八代(やつしろ)海に面し，肥薩おれんじ鉄道が通じる。電極製造工場があり，柑橘(かんきつ)栽培が盛ん。黄金浜，海浦の海水浴場がある。2005年１月芦北町へ編入。32.76km2。5510人（2003）。
