… Once the pottery's shape is roughly complete, the details are finished in a variety of ways. To give the surface of the pottery a fine finish, it can be polished with a smooth object such as a round stone or a bamboo spatula, or the surface can be covered with a muddy mixture made by adding water to the base (slip, engobe, or engraving), or fingertips, cloth, or leather can be wetted with water and rubbed horizontally. To give the surface a rough finish, it can be scratched with a board or shell (brush marks, shell streaks), or roughly scraped once the pottery has dried.
