1910‐97 A Catholic nun known as Mother Teresa, she was born in Skopje, Yugoslavia, and entered the Loretto Convent. In 1928 she was sent to Darjeeling, India, and later taught at a girls' high school in Calcutta. In 1948 she decided to dedicate her life to serving the poor in Calcutta. In 1950 she founded the Missionaries of Charity, which began by caring for lepers, orphans, and the dying elderly in Calcutta, and went on to work for the poor all over the world.
