Theresa [of Calcutta] (English spelling)

A Catholic nun known as Mother Teresa, she was born in Skopje, Yugoslavia, and entered the Loretto Convent. In 1928 she was sent to Darjeeling, India, and later taught at a girls' high school in Calcutta. In 1948 she decided to dedicate her life to serving the poor in Calcutta. In 1950 she founded the Missionaries of Charity, which began by caring for lepers, orphans, and the dying elderly in Calcutta, and went on to work for the poor all over the world.

カトリック修道女。通称マザー・テレサMother Theresa。ユーゴスラビアのスコピエに生まれ,ロレット修道会に入り,1928年インドのダージリンに派遣され,後カルカッタの女子高校で教えたが,48年カルカッタの貧しい人々への奉仕に生涯を捧げることを決意した。50年に彼女が設立した〈神の愛の宣教者会〉は,カルカッタの癩病人,孤児,死を待つばかりの老人の世話から始めて,全世界の貧しい人々のために働いた。
