Nasution - Abdul Haris Nasution

An Indonesian soldier. He was from the Batak ethnic group in North Sumatra. He became an officer cadet in the Dutch East Indies army under the Dutch colony. During the War of Independence from 1945 to 1949, he displayed outstanding military and administrative skills as the commander of the Siliwangi Division. In 1950, he became Army Chief of Staff. In 1952, he led the "October 17th Incident" which called for the abolition of political parties, and was dismissed. In 1955, he became Army Chief of Staff again. He suppressed the Sumatran rebellion by local military forces from 1957 to 1959. He served as Minister of Defense in 1959 and Chief of Staff of the National Defense Army in 1962, and was a central figure in the military that opposed the Communist Party, which rose to power under the Sukarno regime. He escaped assassination in the "September 30th Incident" in 1965, but was injured, and handed over command of the suppression of the Communist Party to General Suharto. In 1966, he became chairman of the Transitional National Consultative Council under the Suharto regime, and retired in 1972. He became increasingly critical of the regime from the late 1970s, and in 1980 he became involved in a critical movement known as "Group 50." A devout Muslim, he has written many books on national defense.
