In Buddhism, a Buddhist dojo is set up to enshrine the principal image of Buddhism, or a Buddhist hall is used as a dojo, and an event is carried out primarily by monks or nuns. In this case, the event is centered around a ritual - a memorial service - that clearly expresses and achieves the purpose of the event. Traditionally, the terms used to describe it were hokai, hoji, but there was no consistency in the definition of each concept, so in recent years the term was coined by Yokomichi Mario, who studies Buddhist rituals from the perspective of performing arts. The purposes of holding temple events are wide-ranging, ranging from offerings for the Three Treasures to self-improvement and altruism, and the categories include celebration, prayer, memorial service, gratitude, repentance, morality, study, training, transmission of precepts, and transmission of the Dharma.
