Mount Wilson Observatory

Mount Wilson Observatory
An observatory located on the summit of Mount Wilson, 1,742 meters above sea level, in California, USA. It was built in 1904 by its first director, George E. Hale. It has 60-inch (152 cm) and 100-inch (254 cm) reflecting telescopes, two tower telescopes, and a 60-inch infrared telescope. The two large telescopes were the largest in the world for decades, and brought great results in observation and nebula photography. It was just before the 200-inch (508 cm) mirror was completed on Mount Paloma in Southern California that Walter Baade observed the Andromeda Galaxy and doubled the scale of the universe. It is currently headquartered in Pasadena, and together with the Mount Paloma Observatory, it is called the Hale Observatory. Edwin Powell Hubble used these telescopes to observe the redshift of galaxies and discover the expansion of the universe.
