Born: 1594/1597 Brussels [Died] July 12, 1643. Livorno, Italy. A sculptor from Flanders who was active in Rome. Commonly known as Il Fiammingo or François Flamand. Born into a family of sculptors, he learned sculpture from his father, Jerome Duquesnoy. His younger brother, Jerome Duquesnoy, who worked at the court of Philip IV of Spain, was also famous. In 1618 he went to Rome and became friends with G. Bernini and N. Poussin. His style is a fusion of the former's Italian Baroque style and the latter's 17th century classicism. His representative works are "Saint Andrew" (1628-40, St. Peter's Basilica) and "Saint Susanna" (1629-33, Santa Maria di Loreto, Rome).
