Honkyo Gaihen - Extra-Chapter of the Teaching

Japanese: 本教外篇 - ほんきょうがいへん

Hirata Atsutane's Shinto book. Also known as Honkyo Jibensaku. 2 volumes. Published in 1806 (Bunka 3). The opening text reads, "I have not yet permitted any other views," and the work was never published. It is a reading notebook of Christian literature translated into Chinese, including "Ten Eccentrics" by Matteo Ricci, whose Chinese name was Rimatou. Atsutane completely reinterpreted the Catholic doctrine he learned from this work, and systematized it by combining it with the belief in the underworld and the view of the afterlife that he had incorporated into his own Shinto worldview. 平田篤胤の神道書。別名《本教自鞭策（じべんさく）》。2巻。1806年(文化3)成立。巻頭に〈未だ他見を許さず〉と記され，公刊されなかった著述。漢名を利瑪竇（りまとう）と名のったマテオ･リッチの《畸人十編》その他，漢訳されたキリスト教文献の読書ノートである。篤胤はここから得たカトリックの教義を換骨奪胎し，自己の神道的世界観に取り入れた幽冥信仰と来世観とを結合して体系化している。【野口武彦】
