Three types of iron carbonyl are known: [Fe(CO) ₅ ], [ _Fe2 (CO) ₉ ], and [ _Fe3 (CO) ₁₂ ]. [Fe(CO)5] is obtained by heating powdered iron obtained by reducing iron oxide(III) with high-pressure CO. [Fe2(CO) ₉ ] is produced by exposing this to ultraviolet light in a vacuum. [ _Fe3 (CO) ₁₂ ] is produced by oxidizing [ _HFe (CO) ₄ ] ^- with an oxidizing agent such as _MnO2 . [ I ] Pentacarbonyl iron(0): [Fe(CO) ₅ ]. A toxic _, colorless liquid with high viscosity. Melting point -20°C, boiling point 103-104°C. Easily soluble in common organic solvents, insoluble in water. Decomposes when exposed to light to give [ _Fe2 (CO) ₉ ]. The structure is a trigonal bipyramidal coordination of CO around Fe. Fe-C 0.1806 nm (axial direction), 0.1833 nm (in-plane). [CAS 13463-40-6] [ II ] Enneacarbonyldiiron(0): [Fe ₂ (CO) ₉ ]. Yellow plate-like crystals. Decomposes to Fe(CO) ₅ at 100-120 °C. Insoluble in organic solvents. Store in a dark, inert atmosphere. Forms a structure in which three CO bridges exist between two Fe atoms. Fe-C 0.185 nm, Fe-Fe 0.246 nm. [CAS 15321-51-4] [ III ] Dodecacarbonyltriiron(0): [Fe ₃ (CO) ₁₂ ]. Dark green crystals. Slightly soluble in common organic solvents, dark green in color. Decomposes when the solution is heated. It has a structure in which one of the bridged COs of [Fe ₂ (CO) ₉ ] is replaced by Fe(CO) ₄ , and the three Fe atoms form a triangle. [CAS 17685-52-8]
