Tagus [River] - Tejo
The longest river on the Iberian Peninsula. In Spain, it is called the Tagus River. It originates in the mountains about 170 km east of Madrid, flows almost westward through the center of the peninsula, turns southwest in Portuguese territory, and empties into the Atlantic Ocean near Lisbon. The upper and middle reaches have many rapids, and the navigable distance is only about 160 km in the lower reaches. The total length is 1,007 km.
