An American female writer. Born in Lockport, New York. Graduated from Syracuse University in 1960. Received an MA in English Literature from the University of Wisconsin in 1961. Published her first collection of short stories, At the North Gate, in 1963, and burst onto the literary scene of the 1960s like a comet. While teaching English Literature at the University of Windsor in Canada, she published so many works that she is considered one of the most prolific contemporary writers. The defining feature of her work, as can be seen in her representative full-length novel, They (1969), is her attempt to use naturalistic techniques to translate the abnormally grotesque, distorted cruelty, and violence that lurk within the minds of people living ordinary, everyday lives into literary reality. Her other works include The Extravagant People (1968), Wonderland (1971), As You Like It (1973), The Assassins (1975), Childwald (1976), The Morning Child (1978), Blacksmoor Romance (1982), Blackwater (1992), a novelization of the third Kennedy tragedy, and Foxfire (1993), a story of courageous girls set in 1950s New York. His works include the short story collections The Wheel of Love (1971), Marriage and Adultery (1972), The Nightside (1977), and The Collector of Hearts (1998), and his poetry collections Unknown Sin (1969), Angel Fire (1973), Time Traveler (1989), and Tenderness (1996).His essays include Hostile Sun (1973), a discussion of D. H. Lawrence, and On Boxing (1987), a homage to men who engage in brutal, lonely battles.
