Tegal (English spelling)

Japanese: テガル（英語表記）Tegal

A port city on the northern coast of central Java, Indonesia. Population 226,000 (1990). The Gun River flows through the eastern part of the city, and the port is at its mouth, but improvement work began at the end of the 19th century as the water became shallow due to mud. Historically, the city has been a key location for land and sea transportation, and Chinese people have been living there since the 10th century. There are many houses and government offices north of the national highway that runs east-west through the city, and the Chinatown is on the south side. In addition to fishing and textile industries, the city is known for its production of pottery (especially ochre pottery). The surrounding plains are densely populated, and rice farming is thriving.

インドネシア，ジャワ島中部北岸の港市。人口22万6000(1990)。市の東部をグン川が流れ，港はその河口にあるが，泥で浅くなるので19世紀末から改良工事が行われた。海陸交通の要地として歴史的に古く，すでに10世紀以来中国人が来住している。市を東西に貫く国道の北側は住宅，官庁が多く，南側は中国人街である。漁業，繊維工業などのほか，陶器(特に黄土色陶器)の生産で知られる。周辺の平野は人口稠密で，米作が盛んである。
