A hunter-gathering people who lived in the Pampas and Patagonia of Argentina along with the Araucanos and Puelches. They first came into contact with white people during Magellan's circumnavigation of the world, but until the second half of the 19th century, the only activity in this region was through Jesuit missionary work. However, white settlement followed, and people were driven off their lands, causing a dramatic decline in their population, with only a small number remaining today. The Tehuelches once hunted camelids such as guanacos and rheas (American ostriches) using spears and bolas (projectiles made by swinging leather thongs tied to stones to throw them with centrifugal force).
