A machine used to pick young tea leaves from grown plants. There are three plucking methods: hand picking, hand scissors picking, and power picking using a powered picking machine. Hand picking is still practiced in some tea-producing areas where quality is a particular requirement, such as gyokuro and high-quality sencha, but scissors picking or power picking are more common. When hand picking, the leaves can be selected and harvested, but with scissors picking and power picking, most of the growing part at the tip of the branch is picked. Tea picking scissors were invented in Shizuoka Prefecture around 1892, and came into practical use around 1921. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
