Tirso de Molina

Spanish playwright. His real name was Gabriel Téllez, and he was a Mercedonian. He was a devoted follower of Lope de Vega, and even called himself his disciple. He is considered one of the three great playwrights of the Golden Age, along with Lope and Calderón de la Barca. He is thought to have written about 400 works, but only 85 comedies and 21 sacramental mystery plays remain. In 1625, he was exiled from Madrid for writing "plays that are vulgar and give evil incentives and examples."

スペインの劇作家。本名をガブリエル･テリェスGabriel Téllezといい，メルセド修道会士。ローペ･デ･ベガの熱心な追随者で，自らその弟子とまで言っているが，ローペやカルデロン･デ･ラ･バルカと並んで〈黄金世紀〉の三大劇作家の一人とされる。約400の作品を書いたと考えられるが，現存するのは85編のコメディアと21編の聖餐神秘劇などである。1625年には〈下品で悪しき刺激と例を与える劇〉を書いたかどで，マドリードから追放の刑の宣告を受けたこともある。
