1571?-1648 Spanish playwright. His real name was Gabriel Téllez, and he was a Mercedonian. He was a devoted follower of Lope de Vega, and even called himself his disciple. He is considered one of the three great playwrights of the Golden Age, along with Lope and Calderón de la Barca. He is thought to have written about 400 works, but only 85 comedies and 21 sacramental mystery plays remain. In 1625, he was exiled from Madrid for writing "plays that are vulgar and give evil incentives and examples." Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
