A city in western Ibaraki Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. It is located on a plateau between the Kinugawa River and the Kokai River. The city center flourished as a key location for water transportation on the Kinugawa River until the mid-Meiji period. It produces a lot of rice, vegetables, and pears, and in recent years, factories for agricultural processing have moved in, and the development of the Tsukuba-Shimotsuma Industrial Park is also underway. It is on the Kanto Railway Jōsō Line, and is home to Taiho Hachiman Shrine and the ruins of Taiho Castle (historic site). In January 2006, Chiyokawa Village, Yūki County, was incorporated. 茨城県西部の市。1954年市制。鬼怒川と小貝川の間の台地にある。中心市街は明治中期まで鬼怒川水運の要地として栄えた。米,野菜,ナシの産が多く,近年は農産加工などの工場も進出し,つくば下妻工業団地の開発も進められている。関東鉄道常総線が通じ,大宝八幡神社,大宝城跡(史跡)がある。2006年1月結城郡千代川村を編入。東日本大震災で,市内において被害が発生。80.88km2。4万4987人(2010)。
