A cuttlefish of the family Cuttlefish, class Cephalopoda, phylum Mollusca. It is a large species with a mantle length of 35 cm and a weight of up to 5 kg. Males have numerous horizontal stripes on their backs as well as oval eye-patterns, so they were traditionally called Mongo squids. However, the name Mongo squid is now used not only for this species, but also for the market name of large species such as the European cuttlefish and the Tropical cuttlefish, which are brought from deep-sea fishing grounds. Each arm has four rows of suckers. The tentacles have eight rows of small suckers, totaling more than 200. The carapace (shell) is boat-shaped and wide, with a U-shaped smooth layer deposited on the inner cone. The dorsal surface of the carapace is relatively smooth. It is caught in large quantities by bottom trawl nets from the East China Sea to the South China Sea. The spawning season in this area is from March to May, and the squids spawn on the seabed at depths of 15 to 30 meters. In the pre-spawning season from November to February, they congregate at depths of 60 to 100 meters. Small numbers are also caught using fixed nets and other fishing gear in southwestern Japan. In the local dialect, they are called kobuika, gicchoika, or maruichi. They are mainly eaten raw, and can be used for very high-quality sashimi and sushi toppings.
