In Western-style architecture, a cornerstone is a ceremony to commemorate the start of construction. It is said to have started as a religious or political ceremony at the start of construction in ancient Greece and Rome. Even in ancient times, offerings and memorials were enclosed underground, and J. Goethe's novel "Ein Affinisch" (1809) shows that such a custom continued. Today, the purpose of the cornerstone is to celebrate the start of construction by placing stones on the site that record the start of construction and other information so that they can be embedded in the building and preserved (→ Cornerstone).
