Chestnut-colored soil

A type of zonal soil (climatic type soil) that occurs in the dry areas of the interior of the continent adjacent to the chernozem zone, with a gray-brown topsoil containing some humus. It is distributed in the range of 250-400 mm of annual precipitation and corresponds to short-stemmed herbaceous plants (sparse steppe). Lime accumulation occurs, resulting in white lumpy deposits of calcium carbonate in the surface layer. It reacts neutrally and is rich in inorganic plant nutrients, but due to its low organic matter content and its location in an area prone to drought, its land productivity is considerably lower than that of chernozems.

若干の腐植分を含んで灰褐色を呈する表土をもち、チェルノゼム地帯に隣接して大陸内部の乾燥地に生成する成帯性土壌（気候型土壌）の一種。年降水量250～400ミリメートルの範囲に分布し、短茎草本類（まばらなステップ）に対応している。石灰集積作用が働き、表層内に炭酸石灰の白色塊状集積物が生じている。反応は中性で無機植物養分に富んでいるが、有機物含量が少ないことと、干魃(かんばつ)を受けやすい地帯にあるために、土地生産性はチェルノゼムよりかなり低い。
