Egyptian monk. Founder of the Christian form of monasticism. His life is legendary, but after being drafted into the Roman army, he is said to have converted to Christianity in 314 and become a hermit under the guidance of Saint Palemon. A few years later, he founded a monastery at Tabennisi and devoted himself to its leadership. By the time of his death, he had formed a large force of nine monasteries with 3,000 monks and one female monastery.

エジプトの修道士。キリスト教における共住修道形式の創立者。その生涯は伝説化されているが,ローマ軍に徴兵されたのち,314年キリスト教徒となり,聖パレモンの指導を受けて隠修士となったといわれる。数年後タベンニーシに修道院を創立し,その指導に全力を注ぎ,死んだときには9つの修道院に 3000の修道士,ほかに1つの女子修道院の大勢力を形成していた。
