His life is legendary, but after being drafted into the Roman army, he is said to have converted to Christianity in 314 and become a hermit under the guidance of Saint Palemon. A few years later, he founded a monastery at Tabennisi and devoted himself to its leadership. By the time of his death, he had formed a large force of nine monasteries with 3,000 monks and one female monastery.
