[Raw] 292? Esuna [Death] 346? Egyptian monk. Founder of the Christian form of monasticism. His life is legendary, but after being drafted into the Roman army, he is said to have converted to Christianity in 314 and become a hermit under the guidance of Saint Palemon. A few years later, he founded a monastery at Tabennisi and devoted himself to its leadership. By the time of his death, he had formed a large force of nine monasteries with 3,000 monks and one female monastery.
