Diakonisse (English spelling)

Diakonisse (English spelling)
Generally, it is a German word that refers to female deacons or deacons, but more specifically, it refers to members of the Diaconisse training school founded in 1836 by Lutheran pastor Th. Friedner in Kaiserswerth, Germany, and its branches established in Europe and the United States. It is a church-approved system that is a revised and revived version of the female deacons that were famous in the early church and date back to the New Testament. In most cases, they remain single for life, live communally, and engage in social work, parish service, education, etc., with a focus on nursing. After World War II, the international organization Diakonia was organized. Following this model, various forms of female deacons have been revived in Protestant churches. In Japan, Japanese Diaconisse are active, centered around the Hamamatsu Diaconisse Mother House and the Bethesda Sisters of Service Mother House (Tokyo, Tateyama).
