American film producer and director. His real name was Micheal Sinnott. He was born in Richmond, near Quebec, Canada. He went to America in 1897 and devoted himself to the theater world, but gradually became interested in film. In 1909, he joined Biograph, where D.W. Griffith was employed, and in 1912, he became independent and founded the Keystone Company. He showed a unique sense for comedy, and continued to create slapstick comedies that were purely about movement, making full use of high-speed chases by Ford Sterling of the Keystone Cops and fat Roscoe Arbuckle, beautiful women in swimsuits, pie throwing, and crazy destruction. These were also called Keystone Comedies or Sennett Comedies. Sennett's mark on American comedy is immeasurable, as most of the popular comedians who would later become famous, such as Chaplin, Keaton, and Ben Turpin, grew up under his guidance.
