Cape Ofuyumisaki

A cape facing the Sea of ​​Japan in central-western Hokkaido. Near the border between the Ishikari and Rumoi Subprefectural Bureaus, this cliff cape is where Mt. Otoyo of the Mashike volcanic group approaches the sea, and there is a lighthouse on the cape. The surrounding area is lined with 100-200 meter sea cliffs, and since the Edo period it has been considered one of the three most dangerous places in Western Ezo. The Otoyo mountain road, which was opened in 1855 (Ansei 2) and threaded through the mountainside, was the only connecting road in the region until recently, but in winter it became an isolated island on land. After difficult construction work, National Route 231 was completed in November 1981 (Showa 56), and a shortcut between Sapporo and Rumoi was opened, but it was closed in December of the same year due to a cliff collapse caused by heavy rain. It was restored in December 1983.

北海道中西部、日本海に臨む岬。石狩(いしかり)、留萌(るもい)両振興局管内の境界に近く、増毛(ましけ)火山群の雄冬山が海に迫る断崖(だんがい)の岬で、岬上に灯台がある。付近は100～200メートルの海食崖が続き、江戸時代から西蝦夷三難所(にしえぞさんなんしょ)（西蝦夷三険岬）の一つとされていた。1855年（安政2）山肌を縫って開かれた雄冬山道が、最近までこの地方唯一の連絡路であったが、冬は陸の孤島となった。国道231号は難工事のすえ、1981年（昭和56）11月に全通し、札幌―留萌間の近道が開かれたが、集中豪雨による崖崩れで同年12月に途絶。1983年12月、復旧した。
