A folk performing art handed down in the Ozato district of Ichikikushikino City, Kagoshima Prefecture. It is an elegant dance that is performed every year on Tanabata, a month late in the year. A procession of feudal lords led by large papier-mâché animals of a deer, tiger, cow, and crane called "Tsukuimon," followed by a procession of dancers performing the Naginata Dance and Taiko Drum Dance, parades through the village. One theory is that it originated from a celebration of Shimazu Yoshihiro's triumphant return from the Korean War. The main dance (Taiko Dance), which is performed with drums and gongs in hand, is said to be based on the custom of chasing insects. It was designated an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan in 1981. Source: About Shogakukan Digital Daijisen Plus Information |
