…On his return to Japan in 1884, he brought back a pure culture of the typhoid bacillus, contributing to the foundation of Japanese bacteriology. In 1885, he discovered the beriberi bacillus (or so he called it), and proved that the plague was transmitted by rat fleas (1897). He also studied the cholera bacillus and the dysentery bacillus, and even debated with Kitasato Shibasaburo on these topics.
