A method of Buddhist evangelism in which one stands on a busy street corner (crossroads) to appeal to people and gain followers by preaching one's beliefs. The story of Nichiren, who preached at the crossroads of Omachi and Komachi in Kamakura, is well known. This method of evangelism has been used since the Middle Ages, when Buddhism became popular among the masses, and was particularly used by Tendai and Nichiren sect monks. It was not seen at all during the Edo period, when free missionary activities were restricted.
