...Both the president and the members of parliament serve five-year terms. The first president was Félix Houphouët-Boigny (1905-93), a political leader from the independence movement. Since independence, the country was under a one-party system led by President Houphouët-Boigny, the Democratic Party of Côte d'Ivoire (PDCI), until 1990. In the spring of 1990, however, the country moved to a multi-party system as a measure to settle the political turmoil caused by the anti-establishment movement calling for political democratization.
